How does Google approach Responsible AI and AI Safety?
🛡️ Building Protections into AI Products
Google integrates protections right from the start, anticipating and testing for various safety and security risks, including those from AI-generated images. Their approach is guided by key AI principles:
Protecting Against Unfair Bias: 🧩 Google has developed tools and datasets to identify and mitigate unfair biases in machine learning models. This is an ongoing research area, with several key papers published and third-party input regularly sought to address societal context.
Red-Teaming: 🛠️ Experts, both in-house and external, participate in red-teaming programs to test for vulnerabilities and potential abuses, including cybersecurity and fairness. Google’s participation in events like the DEF CON AI Village Red Team event helps identify and mitigate risks proactively.
Implementing Policies: 📜 Google has created generative AI prohibited use policies to outline harmful, inappropriate, or misleading content that is not allowed. Their extensive system of classifiers detects and prevents content that violates these policies.
Safeguarding Teens: 👶 As generative AI experiences like SGE expand to teens, Google has developed additional safeguards to limit outputs related to bullying and illegal substances based on developmental needs.
Indemnifying Customers for Copyright: 📚 Google provides strong indemnification protections for both training data and generated output for users of Google Workspace and Cloud services, assuming responsibility for potential legal risks.
🧩 Providing Context for Generative AI Outputs
Google continues its commitment to providing context for information, introducing new tools to evaluate AI-produced content. Features like "About this result" in generative AI Search and additional context for Bard responses help users assess the information they encounter.
Image Metadata and Watermarking: 🖼️ Google ensures that every AI-generated image has metadata labeling and embedded watermarking with SynthID.
Election Advertising Policies: 🗳️ Updated policies require advertisers to disclose when election ads include digitally altered or generated content, providing essential context.
🔒 How Google Protects Your Information
Google builds AI products with privacy at the forefront. Longstanding privacy protections apply to their generative AI tools, allowing users to easily manage their activity data.
Privacy Safeguards: 🛡️ Google never sells personal information and ensures Workspace extensions in Bard maintain user privacy by not allowing content from Gmail, Docs, and Drive to be seen by human reviewers, used for ads, or training the Bard model.
